What does a main line backup look like?

What to do while the line is backed up
Stop running water in the house: no washer, dishwasher, showers or extra flushing, since all of it ends up in the same blocked line. Do not pour chemical drain openers into a main line backup. They will not reach a clog that far down, and in the galvanized and cast iron pipe still found in older Thornton homes the caustic liquid can pit thin pipe and leaves a hazard sitting in the line for whoever opens it. If sewage is on the floor, keep people and pets out of it.
