Drain Cleaning vs Hydro Jetting in Thornton

Drain Cleaning vs Hydro Jetting in Thornton

A cable machine clears most clogs, whether in one fixture (clogged drain repair) or in the main line (drain cleaning), while hydro jetting is the tool for grease build-up and root intrusion that a cable can't fully clear. Which one fits depends on how many drains are slow and what a camera shows inside the line.

What You See at Home

First, count how many drains are affected. One slow sink or tub, with everything else draining normally, points to a clog in that fixture's own branch line. That is a job for clogged drain repair.

Several slow drains at once is a different story. So is a toilet that gurgles when the washer drains, or water rising in the basement floor drain. Those signs mean the blockage sits in the main line, where every fixture in the house meets. A cable pass on one sink will not fix that.

Cable Machine or Hydro Jetting

What a cable machine does

A cable machine feeds a rotating steel cable into the line. The head bores through the clog and breaks up hair, paper and soap scum, then pulls debris back out. It opens a channel without harsh force on the pipe, which suits a single fixture on a branch line. If one drain is slow and the rest of the house is fine, a cable is usually enough.

What hydro jetting does

Hydro jetting sends high-pressure water through a nozzle that scours the inside of the pipe. Where a cable punches a hole through a clog, jetting washes the pipe wall clean. That matters in two cases.

The first is grease. In a kitchen line, grease cools and coats the pipe, and a cable leaves most of that coating behind. The drain clears for a while, then slows again. Jetting strips the film. Our hydro jetting page covers how the process works.

The second is roots. Older homes in South Thornton, around 80229, often have clay sewer laterals with joints every few feet. Roots find the small gaps at those joints and grow into the line. A cable cuts a channel through the root mass, but the roots grow back. Jetting clears more of the pipe and leaves less behind. North Thornton, around 80602 and 80241, is newer construction, mostly PEX supply and PVC drain lines, so root trouble at joints is less likely there.

Why a Camera Inspection Comes First

Jetting a line you have not looked at is a gamble. A camera run shows what the blockage is made of and what shape the pipe is in.

Front Range soil is often expansive clay. It swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and winter frost and spring thaw add more movement. Over the years that can shift a sewer line, pull a joint apart, crack a section, or leave a belly, a low spot where water and solids settle. Older cast iron and clay lines are the most likely to show this.

If the camera finds a bellied line, an offset joint or a crack, jetting is the wrong move. It can push debris into the low spot or make a crack worse. That line needs sewer line repair, and cleaning comes after. If the camera shows a sound line with grease or roots, jetting is the right next step. We run the camera before we recommend any digging.

What Drives the Cost

We explain what we find and put a written scope and price in front of you to approve before work begins. A few things decide what that scope looks like:

  • Access. A cleanout makes the job simpler. If there is no usable cleanout, the plumber may have to work through a toilet or vent, or a cleanout may need to be added.
  • Length and condition of the line. A longer or older line takes more work.
  • Whether a camera run is needed. On a main-line problem it almost always is.
  • Whether roots need cutting, and how heavy they are.
  • Any repair the camera turns up, which changes the job from cleaning to repair.

What to Do Right Now

Stop running water in the house. Every sink, shower and washer that drains adds more water to a line that is already blocked. Don't keep flushing the toilets.

Don't pour chemical drain cleaner into the line. It sits in a blocked pipe, can irritate skin and eyes when the plumber opens it up, and does little against grease or roots. If a plumber is going to jet the line, leave it out.

If sewage is coming up through a floor drain, tub or toilet, that is an emergency. See our emergency plumber page and call us at (720) 856-5811, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Until the line opens, keep people out of the affected area.
